Brisbane
gives itself
a big break
GOLD COAST: Melbourne's
nightmare continued yesterday as it
suffered a 26-point loss to the Bris
. bane Bears in the Australian Football
league match at Carrara.
It was the Bears' second victory of
the season as they ran out 16.7 (103)
to 11.11 (77) winners.
Both teams now share equal last
place on the AFL ladder with two
wins and a draw, although Mel
bourne just shades the Bears on per
centage.
The home team raced out to a
■16-point lead at quarter time and
then for the first time this season
went to the big break with a com
manding 36-point lead.
They also passed the 100-point
barrier for the first time this year in
the last quarter.
It was only the second time Bris
bane had beaten Melbourne in nine
tries and its first victory over the
Demons since the club's foundation
in 1987.
Forward Scott Mclvor led the way
in the goalkicking department with a
bag of five.
Brisbane coach Robert Walls was
furious with his charges at
three-quarter time, even though they
held a 25-point lead.
His anger was directed at a costly
last five minutes which allowed Mel
bourne to post three goals.
"Knowing how we have butchered
leads in the past I wasn't about to
heap praise to give them a false sense
of security otherwise we may have
bombed it," he said.
