Air Raid Precautions tests were carried out in Adelaide last week on the biggest scale yet attempted. The time of the alert was kepi secret, but when the sirens went shortly before 11 a.m. all branches of the service went into operation. The streets were evacuated under the directions of steel-helmeted police and wardens, the first aid posts appeared and began to treat casualties, the fire brigade and volunteer fire fighting organisations' dealt with imaginary fires, demolition squads got to work on unsafe buildings, and various city establishments put into operation plans for removing their staffs to shelters. Some phases of the test are pictured below. A demolition squad finds a balcony which has been rendered unsafe, and immediately proceeds to shore it. Horse vehicles had to pull to the side of the road when the alert went, and the horses had to be unharnessed and safely tethered. ... [ILLUSTRATED]
