NONE OF THE PUBLISHED STORIES of the earthquake and fire which devastated Napier and Hastings, in New Zealand, describe the scene of terrible destruction as effectively as these photographs. This picture was taken after fire had sweat through the stricken city. In the foreground is the Cathedral, which was destroyed. The white building on the right is the Public Trustee Office. GREAT SLABS OF CONCRETE fell on the sleeping quarters of the Nurses' Home at Napier, killing; some of the staff. Ratings from H.M.S. Veronica, which was in the harbor, were organised for rescue work. Splendid help was rendered to the injured and the bodies of many of those killed were recovered. The photograph, shows the ratings supervising the extrication of dead and dying from the Nurses' Home. ... [ILLUSTRATED]
