  2. THE MOST TERRIBLE DISASTER IN THE HISTORY OF THE BRITISH RAILWAYS.

    The most terrible disaster in tie an rials of the British railways occurred on Saturday morning, May 22, at Quintinshill, close to Gretna Green, and nine miles north of Carlisle, where a troop train came into collision with a local passenger train, and before any warning could be given the northward-bound Scotch express dashed into the wreckage. To add to the horror of the scene fire broke out and converted the debris into a fiery furnace, in which many victims were consumed. It was he troop train which sufiered most severey, many of the 7th Royal Scots, including three officers, losing their lives. In all 158 persons were killed and nearly 200 injured. ... [ILLUSTRATED]
