    The French have recaptured the whole of Fort de Douaumont, except the north-eastern corner, from the Germans by means of converging attacks from the south, east, and west. Fort Douaumont occupies a dominating position on high ground commanding the lower ground to the east and north-east held by the Germans, hence the importance of its recapture. During the last day or two the French have also gained ground near Haudromont Farm (near Douaumont village), and also to the south-east of Fort Douaumont in the direction of Vaux and Damloup.
