  2. Field Marshal Smuts 80 Dies After Long Fight

    CAPE TOWN, Tues (AAP): Eighty-year-old Field Marshal Jan Christiaan Smuts, for many years Prime Minister of the Union of South Africa, died suddenly - and peacefully - at his home at Irene, near Pretoria, at 3.35 a.m. (Perth time) today. The General-that is what he preferred to be called - had been fighting to regain his health after an illness which began on May 28. Earlier in the day he had listened to a radio news bulletin o nhis health and jokingly said to his wife: "Well, now the ^vorld knows how I am getting on." He had spent a happy day in the countryside with his wife and family, roaming among the trees and flow- ers he had always admired since his days on the African veldt with the Boers.
