    The French Army has recently adopted a light steel helmet to be worn by the troops as a protection against head-wounds, which, it was found, formed a large proportion of the casualties. Many of these wounds, caused by sholl-splinters and shrapnel-balls, might have been prevented or much modified by a metal headpiece. The soldiers used to put improved helmets on their kepis, such as the lids of their moss-bowls.
