    The capture of Erzeroum by Russian forces advancing over the frontier from Artvin and other points further to the east gives our Allies possession of the chief bulwark of the Turkish power in the region between the Black Sea and the Persian border. Erzeroum occupies a strong natural position, and is the most important centre of communications in all this region. Through it runs the chief highway from Trebizond and the Black Sea coast to Persia, which is here crossed by the road runing south from the Transeaucasian frontier to the valley of the Euphrates.
