IN RETALIATION FOR NAZI AIR RAIDS in the Orkneys, the Royal Air Force showed the Germons its mettle last week by launching a terrific bomb attock on the air bases on the island of Sylt, off the coast of Denmark. Wave after wave of bombers flew over the bases for seven hours of darkness, crashing their bombs into hangars, slipways, munition dumps, groundworks, and railways. Fifty planes' are reported to have been used, and the damage was enormous, yet only one British machine failed to return. Although Sylt is strongly defended by anti-aircraft devices and interceptor planes, the British machines were able to get through. They encountered small resistance in the air.
