Article : 278 wordsSir,—Referring to Mr. Lillieo's letter re the Powers Bill, I have said publicly and in the press that the attempt that will have to be made when the conflict ends to rehabilitate the 750,000 men we have in uniform is such a stupendous one that the Commonwealth must be given some powers. It was agreed at the Canberra convention, unanimously. that the Commonwealth should be transferred certain powers for five years after the war concludes. Every Premier and Leader of the Opposition, agreed on the plan adopted; after many days of discussion. This matter is far beyond politics. Briefly, the question is, "Are you in favor of this State joining in a Commonwealth scheme to find something for the fighting men to do when they return?" Easily the biggest percentage of electors will say definitely "Yes." Otherwise we will find a repetition of the 5/ a day we remember in the depression period a few years back, I have waited in vain for the opponents of the Powers Bill to suggest an alternative scheme. It is easy to criticise, but that criticism would sound better if some alternative scheme were put up for the benefit of the 30,000 or so Tasmanians involved. I suggest that the Legislative Council should have ...
