The Art Society of New South was founded in 1880. and the first exhibition of pictures was held in the Garden Palace. When the Palace was burnt down in 1883, the Society migrated to the Town Hall, and, subsequently took rooms of its own at 70 Pitt-Street, where its headquarters have been located for the last ten years. Since 1883 the Government has annually granted a sum of money for the encouragement of art. A split in the ranks occured some time ago, and another society was formed.
