The USS aircraft-carrier Bunker Hill, flagship of Vice-Admiral Marc Mitscher, was hit twice within 30 seconds by two Japanese suicide pilots off Okinawa on May ll. The crippled carrier became an inferno of flame and smoke. As the flames were conquered they revealed the charred remains of fighter planes which had been ready to take off when the Japanese struck.
