The hitherto unexplored hinterland of New Guinea, which is estimated to be 4,000 square miles in area, with a population of 200,000 natives who have never heard of white men, extends from the head waters of the Ramu River to those of the Purari, and is shown dark in the map. The photographs, the first published of these interesting people, were taken by the director of Native Affairs and District Services (Mr. E. W. P. Chinnery). They show (centre) the nature of the Upper Purari country, and (left) tis natives, the men wearing the tapa cloth capes peculiar lo the area, with grass skirts and the cowrie shell adornments which signify thal the wearer has "killed his man."
