A frame for driving in test piles has been borrowed from the Railways Department, and in order to determine, the nature of the foundation of the bridge, two piles' have been driven on the cast side of the old bridge In all four piles will be put down, quo at each corner of the, bridge. The piles are 38 ft. long, and the driving hammer weighs six tons. It is a McKiernan-Terry No. 11B steam hammer,'and the first pile was driven in 37 ft. and the second—put down on Friday—31 ft. into the ground. When all-the desired information has been securcd as to the bearing capacity of the ground, tenders will be called.
