    The winning birds and pens in the 1922-23 egg-laying competition at Burnley are shown. The tired-looking hen in the centre, with most of her plumage missing, came second In the contest; she ls a Black Orpington, owned by Mr. C. E. Graham, and, on a wet-mash diet she laid 312 eggs in the year, or only one less than the total of each of the two winners who tied for first prize. These birds are shown as follows:—Lower left, Mr. W. Peart's White Leghorn (wet mash); lower right. Mr. C. McDonald's Whito Leghorn (dry mash). In the uppor right-hand picture ls the winning pen of six yhlte Leghorns, owned by Mr. A. Enticknap, and tod on dry mash, the record of which was 1,609 eggs. On the left (above) ls Mr. W. A.
