  4. CLEANING THE STREETS OF THE CITY.

    Every effort is made by the City Council to keep the streets clean, and more work than is realised by the general public is accomplished at night. Above is a unit of the council's fleet, which traverses more than 30 miles of streets in a night. The unit comprises three Laffly sweepers, an Elg'n sweeper, and a flusher. A Laffly sweeper goes first and sweeps out the gutter, the refuse being left in a line on the roadway. Two other Laffly sweepors then pass "en [?]chelon," the first one sweeping from the middle of the road Inwards, and the next sweeping all of the dirt Inwards again so that the Elgin sweeper is able to pick up all of the refuse, leaving the road clean.
