His Excellency the Governor (the Earl of Stradbroke) will formally open the new Church street bridge over the Yarra to-night. The occasion will mark the inauguration of the new electric tramway service from Victoria street to Toorak road, which gives a new route from Chapel street to the city; trams will pass simultaneously in the centre of the bridge and sever a ribbon, thus opening the thoroughfare for traffic. On the left is a photograph by Mr. F. O'Brien of the old bridge just before demolition. It was built in 1837, and was portion of a much longer structure intended for use by the Bri[?] in the Crimea war, but not needed on account of the sudden collapse of the Russians.
