The buyers are seated in tiers arranged in a semi-circle around the auctioneer's rostr in, and as each lot is offered pandemonium breaks loose. Excited buyers shout out their bids, each seeking to drown the other and catch the auctioneer's ear as well as his eye. As all seem to be shouting at once, the marvel is that the auctioneer can distinguish the first bidder. Those seated in the front row apparently have the best chance of their bids being accepted, and the seats are allotted each season according to the quantity of wool purchased by a buying broker during the preceding season. The sales are held in the afternoon, the morning being devoted to an inspection of the wool in the warehouses. A dispute is almost unknown, the buyers accepting the auctioneer's decision as final.
