  8. H.M.A.S. MELBOURNE.

    Second-class protected cruiser, 5,600 tons register, which completed her speed trials satisfactorily last month, and is now ready to be handed over to the Commonwealth Government. The Melbourne was laid down in the yards of Mrssrs. Cammel, Laired, and Co., Birkenhead, on April 4, 1911, and was launched on May 30. The contract date for her delivery was August, 1912, but owning to strikes the time had to be considerably extended. The Melbourne is 430ft. in length, with a beam of 48ft. 6in., and a draught of 15ft. Her engines have an indicated horse-power of 25,000lb., which drive four screws ... [ILLUSTRATED]
