It was not the intention of the association to foster illfeeling between employers and employees, lint Us long as the company treated its men in it lordly, liigh-hiindcd manner there woulel be no effective co-operation. The executive considered that they lind a good case in the iiclion against the company in the interests of Conductor Johnston, yet if an amicable settlement could be arrived at be thought the executive would withdraw the charge, provided fliat the eomnanv reinstated Johnston in his posi tion. (Applause.) Ile consi dered that by the end of the month 93 per cent, of the Melbourne Tramway Com pany's employees would be members of the union. fApplousc.) The executive recog; nised that it was imperative that the com pany [should employ "spotters," bul what they aimed nt was that when n "spotter" found anything wrong with a gripman or n conductor lie should tell the man of his offence at once, nnd tell him thal be wns going to report him. Mr. O'Connor.-If the men got a good chairman, lhere was everv probability that they would go for a fortnight's holiday on full pay. (Applause.) Bill, above nil, they wanted to have altered the whole sys tem of inquiry into charges which bud been levelled against them. (Applause.) They were asked for on explanation, and when they gave it,.they were told, "I knew you woulel deny,it(laughter)-but wc have every reason to believe that our inspectors have told us the truth."
