TN a fast-run race at Flemington racecourse on Tuesday the firm favourite Marabou won the Melbourne Cup. He made the most of his advantage in the weights and, finishing like a true stayer, he beat Sarcherie into second place. Sylvandale was third. Sarcherie was unlucky as she was forced to make her own pace in the early stages of the race, and Sylvandale was unable to concede 2llb, to Marabou when it came to the run home. Peter Pan, the winner of the previous Cup, failed badly. He will now be spelled. A great crowd saw the race, the attendance being estimated at over 100,000.
