    Merredin dates back to 1864, when the country surrounding its present town site was explored by C. C. [?] but it was not till 1889 that the place was officially noted. In that year H. S. King located Merredin Peak, (the name being derived from the native name of a huge rock close by) and in the following year he laid out and declared 20 lots. which, however, were not taken up.
