    Charles Yelverton O'Connor was bor at Gravelmouth, Ireland, in 1843, and received his education and early engineering training in that country. In 1865 he migrated to New Zealand, and, in April, 1891, accepted the position of Engineer-in-Chief of Western Australia—a post that carried with it the acting general managership of the railways. In those boom days Western Australia conducted a vigorous policy of public works for which Mr. O'Connor was responsible. The many engineering problems needing his attention led, in 1896, to his relinquishing the management of the railways.
