  10. THE DARDANELLES.

    Combined naval and military forces of the Allies, which include troops from Australia, are now actively knocking at the Egean gateway to Constantinople. The land forces are on both shores of the Dardanelles. In between is a huge fleet of warships, which has already been up almost as far as The Narrows, between Kilid Bahr and Chanak. Kum Kale, the big fortress on the Asiatic point of the entrance is already in the [?]ands of the Allies. The Dardanelles extend from end to end, for 45 miles. The strait has a width of about four miles at the widest part, and of less than one mile at the narrowest, where the key of the defences lies, between Kilid Bahr and Chanak.
