In the top picture the young students are seen hard at work, wrestling with the problems the examiners had set before them, in order that those eligible for the twenty scholarships given by the Council of the Working Men’s College might be chosen. Boys with an eighth-grade education, or who had passed the Merit certificate, were able to sit.
