  3. THE RICHMOND DISASTER—PLAN OF THE BLOCK.

    This plan will assist readers in following the evidence taken at the enquiry in connection with the Richmond disaster. It shows the block section on which the two trains collided. The section is guarded, first, by two sets of signals near the South Yarra station, known as the "starter" and "advance starter" signals. On the block is the "distant" signal, shown above. At it the fog signaller was stationed with detonators. Near the Richmond station the approach was guarded by the "home" signal, shown as No. 4 signal. This signal was not interpreted by a fog signaller. The scene of the accident was beyond the "home" signal, just past the stationmaster's office buildings, at the entrance to the station.
