Tumut is situated on the south bank of the Tumut River, a tributary of the Murrumbidgee, about 322 miles by rail from Sydney. The town is surrounded by beautiful mountain scenery, through which flows the Tumut River, said by many who have seen it to be one of the best and prettiest streams along the whole of its course to be found in New South Wales, if not in Australia. The climate of Tumut cannot be surpassed, the average temperature being 58.9, and the altitude is from 1200ft to 1500ft. The Tumut River has great attraction for the man with the rod and line, being well stocked with trout. Small holders occupy the valley of the Tumut, which is one of the most fertile spots to be found in New South Wales, and wherein maize, barley, oats, wheat, tobacco, etc., are produced. A visitor to Tumut speaking at the district said: "The country surroundings are beautiful and the luxuriant growth of English trees ... [ILLUSTRATED]
