  4. Shale Mining near Murrurundi.

    Three miles or so out from the town of Murrurundi, which is situated on the Page River, 192 miles north-west of Sydney, a kerosene shale mine now being worked is giving employment to a fair number of men. Our illustration depicts operations underground at the mine. The earliest period at which kerosene shale was known to exist in the Murrurundi district was about 1860; and a year or so later a sample of "combustible schist" was exhibited at the London Exhibition.
