  2. Building a Bridge in 19 Minutes

    It takes thirty members of the engineers' training school at Liverpool just 19 minutes to build a bridge 168 feet long across the George's River. And in another 18 minutes they can demolish the structure, and neatly pack the pieces in barges. The individual pictures, showing the men at work are: 2.--Nearing the end of the 19 minutes. 1.--The final touch--curves and irregularities are adjusted by moving the pontoons. 5.--Bringing the material to the site. 4.--Keeping a watchful eye--(left) Major Speckman, Adjutant, Divisional Engineers, 2nd District; (right) Col. Martin, Director of Engineers. 3.--Getting the pontoons into position. The school is made up of permanent officers attached to the engineers, and includes representatives from Victoria and Queensland. Later they will pass their knowledge on to the rank and file ...
