DRIFTING RED SAND practically engulfed this residence (that of the stationmaster) at Parachilna soon after the arrival of a new occupant of the position (Mr. Fullarton). In the top picture, the house is shown as it appeared when taken over by Mr. Fullarton five months ago. Within two months, the surrounding sand had almost reached the roof, as shown in the centre photograph. Dragged by a team of eight donkeys, a scoop was patiently used to clear away the sand. Sometimes it is necessary for Mr. Fullarton to dig his way out the back door in the mornings, and to clear about a bucket of sand from the kitchen table before breakfast. Sand had piled so high over the Parachilna stockyard (bottom picture) as to make walking over the fence a fairly steep climb. Sand-drift is a serious problem also at other townships in the Far North. ... [ILLUSTRATED]
