  17. LARGEST LOCOMOTIVE IN THE COMMONWEALTH.

    A heavy express passenger engine, of the NN class, just constructed in the Eveleigh workshops to the design of Mr. K. E. Lucy, chief mechanical engineer. It is the largest locomotive in the Commonwealth, capable of developing between 1200 and 1500 horse-power, and, attached to the Melbourne limited, express, is expected to average 35 or 40 miles an hour, with a maximum speed of about 70 miles an hour. She will make her trial trip to Peurith next week. Thirty similar locomotives are now in course of construction at Eveleigh. This engine is six-coupled, With four-wheeled leading bogey, and has cylinder 22½ inches in diameter by 26 inch stroke. The working pressure is 1701b per square inch fas against. 160Ib. of the next largest engine), the driving wheels are 5ft. 9in. in diameter, and a weight of 38 tons Dewt. is available for adhesion.
