    The extent of the land frontier between Italy and Austria-Hungary is 484 miles. The coastline of the peninsula measures 2052, less than half of which is on the Adriatic Sea. On the Continental frontier the principal pusses of the Alps are defended by fortifications. The basin of the Po is also studded with fortified places, the chief strong places in the regions being the following:--Casale, Placeuza, Verona, Mantua (these last two belong to the old Austrian quadrilateral), Venice, and Alessandria.
