    This sketch gives a very clear idea of the battlefield of Magersfontein, and of the practically insuperable obstacles which faced the attacking force. It was at Magersfontein that Lord Methuen was beaten back after winning the big victories of Belmont and Modder River. The British forces were in a measure led into a trap, the Boer artillery trenches being masked with bushes and green branches.
