  2. Key to the Roer: This dam has held up three Allied armies, now target in Montgomery's new attack

    It is now revealed that German control of two Roer dams, the Urft (above) and the Schkammanuauel, has been retarding progress of three Allied armies, because the German threat to flood them if the Allies attempted to cross the Roer would have engulfed our troops in thousands of tons of water. The dams are about 10 miles south of Duren. The Urft covers 531 acres, and controls the flow into the Sehkammanuauel, which is 1008 feet long and 180 feet above the river bed.
