    LAKE WINDERMERE. The English Lakes District, familiarly known as "the lakes," consists of mountains and lakes covering an area of about 35 miles square in the counties of Cumberland, Westmorland, and northern Lancashire, close to the Scottish border. Some of the most beautiful lake and mountain scenery in the British Isles is to be seen in this area, which for many years was the home of Wordsworth, Coleridge, Southey, and de Quincey, and, years later, John Ruskin.
