    The basilica of St. Peter stands on the site occupied in ancient times by the gardens and circus of Nero, where the torture and martyrdom of hundreds of Christians took place, the relics, and among them those of St. Peter, being buried in a grotto close at hand. Pope St. Anacletus had an oratory erected upon the tomb of the Apostle and the Emperor Constantino in 326 A.D. built there a basilica. The inevitable ruin of this church in the reign of Pope Nicholas V. inspired that Pontiff with the magnificent project which he began and which was subsequently carried out. ... [ILLUSTRATED]
