Australia's bolwers performed sensationally on Friday in dismissing Sutcliffe, Jardine, Hammond and Ames only 30 runs on the board, but the later batsmen made a fine recovery and England's first innings total reached the respectable one of 341. Australia started almost as badly and recovered but the recovery was not so good as that of the Englishmen, and the total was only 222, or 119 behind England's score.
