    The Small Shop Boy was very miserable and had to use his big red handkerchiel ever so many times as be swept and tidied up. His nisster kept a bird shop, and amongst all the birds that squawked and screamed and trilled and chirped, Topknot and Tuppeny had been the Small Shop Boy’s favourites.They were two big grey parrots, and the cleverness of those two would have surprhed you. _ , . ,It was jnst that which made Dulcie s father buy them for his little girl. She was really a little bit afraid of them at first, until her father told her that they were quite and wouMn t hurt a fly.“ Pretty Poll! Picitv P od!’ imII il Dulcie every now and then, though she took good care to keep at a safe distance from their cages.But 6he needn’t have done this, for Topknot and Tuppeny were far too depressed to do anything but sit humped up at the end of their perches, and look sadly at each other, taking no notice whatever of all the little girl’s friendly advances. ^They hadn’t a big red handkerchief to use like the Small Shop Boy, but they were really just as miserable.When bedtime came, Tulcie said goodnight to them, but no one thought to put a cover over their cages, so the poor parrots shivered all night and hardly slept a wink After breakfast next morning father said to Dulcie: . . . . . .“ The shopman told me that these birds are very clever, especially Topknot, and that if he is let out of his cage and the door fastened, he can climb up and undo it himself when he wants to get back again.“ How clever!” exclaimed the little girl Do let us see if he really can!” The cage door was opened, and Topknot invited to come out and take a walk.But the parrot just sat and looked at them, making no attempt to come dow n from his perch. „ ...
