    Dear Sir,—While sitting at the camp fire on our respective stools, a chunk of u»an fern, my mate asked me if T knew anything about the pioneer prospectors of the North West of Tasmania &nd:-who «found >the first.^gold. / No.. Well 1 will tell you. The years 1886- 7 were reputed to be the worst on farmers known on the Nor* West; The market value of potatoes would not have paid people to cart them to Stanley, good farm hands were offered 5/- u week and keep, and a great many wen were out of work, some with families. Mr. James Kay, a resident of Forest at the time, with a large family, went out to the Arthur River and found alluvial gold. Although there were a good many men returned from Ballarat with the gold fever, and a good many of them were out prospecting, yet 1 think Mr. Kay’s was the first gold find in the Nor* West, and 1 believe it was the first in the State. It was in 1867, and saved the situation with the farmers and rural workers in Circular Head. Men, young and old, went out returning every five or six weeks with from £6 to £25 worth. There were four Kay brothers there, 1 think one of them died there, and had to be tarried in on a stretcher. The Uggings lasted five years. ...
