  9. WHAT DELAYED THE SOUTHERN CROSS.

    The departure of Squadron-Leader Kingsford Smith from Western Australia for Adelaide, which was to have been made last Sunday, was delayed owing to the boggy conditions at the aerodrome. Our photograph gives some idea of the nature of the grounds through heavy rains. It was taken on the occasion of thelauding of the Southern Cross in Western Australia, when the 'plane was going straight for the big ditch in the foreground, and only clever navigation saved it.
