  2. Vive la France: French Red Cross Button Day.

    Friday, November 16, was French Red Cross Button Day, a fact which was allowed to escape no one's notice, and on every coat and blouse in the city was a button depicting a soldier in red trousers who cried 'Vive la France!" This fervent prayer for the wellbeing of Great Britain's gallant and lively neighbours was the keynote of the day, and it found practical expression in the usual generous way. The main streets were gay with bunting, and gayer still with stalls and pretty button sellers. The day was marked by some special events, and notably by a march of troops shortly after noon.
