Sutherland Shire is rich not only in scenic beauty, but in historical interest. For it was within its borders, at Kurnell, that Captain look first landed on Australian soil; the first white man to die in this country—Forby Sutherland, one of Cook's sailors—was buried there, and gave his name to the shire; and the beautiful Port Ho[?] discovered by Bass and Flinders on March 30, 1796. This bridge, which cost about £300,000, supplants the old steam punt which for many years has been inadequate to deal with the tremendous stream of traffic at Tom [?] been imposed by the shire council on the br[?] motorists [?] sixpence during the week and one shitting on Saturdays and Sundays. The number of cars using the bridge so greatly exceeds the estimate upon which the tolls were based that it is probable the week-end charge will soon be su[?].
