We are apt to forget in these days when the sheep is king that most of the pastoral pioneers of Australia were cattlemen. It Was they who opened up the western plains of New South Wales and Victoria, the rolling downs of Queensland, and the rich cattle lands of the Northern Territory. There Were no outback railways in those days, and all movements of cattle had to be done overland. The pioneers themselves, and subsequently the drovers who moved the great mobs over vast areas of unfenced country, became known as the overlanders. In this article G. M. Smith relates ...
