A cablegram last week-end stated:—The attempt by Hsia Chao, civil governor of Chekiang, to seize Shanghai, the richest military prize in the whole of China, while General Sun Chuanfang's attention was engaged in a life-and-denth struggle against the Cantonese in Central China, apparently ended in failure. Hsia's boldness vanished and turned to panic when he realised that his plot had been discovered, and that General Sun was rushing troops to meet his advance.
