ONE of the first aggressive acts of the Austrians against Italy was an aerial raid on the Venice Arsenal; the enemy aeroplanes were, however, speedily driven off. Venice is still a valuable naval port, whose seawalls, being protected by forts, were, before this war, regarded as almost impregnable. The entrance to the Arsenal (in which there is a wonderful museum containing numerous evidences of the former greatness of the city) is still guarded by the four antique marble lions which Francesco Moros[?], the naval hero and last Venetian conqueror of Turkey, brought by way of Athens from the Peloponnesus, which was reconquered in 1687. ...
