SOME of the heaviest fighting of the whole war has taken place in that portion of the western front shown on this map. The enforced retirement of the Allies on account of the poisonous fumes utilised by the Germans north-east of Ypres, in their desperate attempt to break through to the coast, caused a readjustment of the Allied line, which, so far as could be gauged from the meagre information contained in the cables, then ran north and south, from near Nieuport, on the coast, to a point between Lizerne and Ypres, then curved round to the west of Zonnebeke, and continued south-west on its way to Armentieres and the La ...
