WHEN this photograph was taken for the "Mail" shortly before the departure of the first contingent, the officers figuring in it could not have foreseen that in their first engagement against the enemy three of their number would be killed and the remaining one wounded. But so it has happened. On the left of the picture is Major F. D. Irvine, Brigade Major to Colonel MacLaurin; next to him is Lieut.-Colonel Onslow Thompson, commanding the 1th Battalion of Infantry; and the third figure is Colonel H. N. MacLaurin, commanding the First Infantry Brigade. All these were killed in action at the Dardanelles. On the right of the picture is Major C. M. Macnaghten, who ... [ILLUSTRATED]
