BY the sinking of the Cunard liner Lusitania off the south coast of Ireland last Friday and the murder of over 1500 of her passengers and crew Germany has committed one of the most appalling crimes in the history of civilisation. The great liner was on her way to Liverpool from America, carrying over 2000 souls on board. Before she left New York a number of her passengers received mysterious messages from unknown sources warning them that the vessel would be torpedoed. Captain Turner, however, assured them that his vessel could outdistance any submarine afloat, and only a few refused to proceed. When 15 miles off Old Head of Kinsale at 2.30 on Friday afternoon, while many of the passengers were still at lunch, someone on deck caught sight of a conning-tower 1000 yards away.
