For many decades in the early history of Australia the stage-coach was the only means by which regular overland transit could be effected, and, despite the roughness of the roads and of the accommodation, this method of transport was often enough an exhilarating experience. The above picture, which depicts one of the Royal Mail coaches of the famous firm of Cobb and Co. traversing a patch of rough country in a storm, shows, however, that a coach journey could be anything but pleasant.
