  2. LAUNCHING THE FERNDALE

    The Commonwealth steamer Ferndale (12,800 tons) was launched at Cockatoo Island on Thursday, the ceremony being performed by Mrs. Earle Page, wife of the Federal Treasurer, who, just before cutting the ribbons holding a bottle of Australian wine, said—"I name this ship Ferndale. I am proud that she is the fine result of Australian workmanship, and I congratulate those who have so faithfully and skilfully constructed her. May she be blessed as an invaluable aid to the commerce of Australia, and may God's protecting care be over all who sail in her." ... [ILLUSTRATED]
